Ice Dam... the monster grew unnoticed

Geesh!.. somehow there is one cubby upstairs that stayed warm. The heat rose and melted the deep snow which ran to the gutter and froze. It built up under snow and I saw it the other day. I notice some melting going on as the bright sun brought the temperature to about 21. I got a ladder, hatchet, hammers and a big screw driver and tried to break it loose. Yikes, the ice is so hard, my arms are worn out and I barely made a dent in it. I did open up the area and hole to the downspout so it can trickle down as it does finally melt some more. I used a shovel and broom and freed up the roof vent for this area and found a heating duct in the cubby that was open, maybe leaking enough heat into the area for this to occur. I covered it with fiberglass insulation, and hopefully now the little cubby room will cool and this bad situation will not get worse. A word to the wise: keep your roof vents cleared and pull down the lower roofs snow. I am concerned, but there's nothing more I can do now. I'll need some luck and this won't make a serious problem later. Scooter in his parka, kept me company while I chipped, and made it at least look like I wasn't talking to myself. That's all for now, my arms are limp and I'm hungry.
